Domain Name FAQ |

1. What is a domain name?
A domain name is an address which allows anyone to access your website on the Internet. By allowing us to host your website, you save thousands of dollars on purchasing the necessary hardware equipment, high speed network lines and the necessary software which can total to RM 30,000 or more per month. This is not a relevant amount of money to host just a single website. When we host for your website, you are allocated a web space in our servers so that your website will be accessible by anyone from the Internet.
2. Who can apply for a domain name from MYNIC?
Any Malaysian based organisations that have registered with ROC, ROB or ROS can apply for a (.com.my) domain. Network related businesses can apply for .net.my domain. Educational institutions and government organisations can apply for (.edu.my) and (.gov.my) respectively. Registration from MYNIC is NOT open to individuals. Individuals can apply for domain names from InterNIC.
3. Do you provide domain name registration?
Yes. We provide hassle free domain name registration service for you. You will be the rightful owner of the domain name, not us. We will only be the technical support. This way, you can do whatever you want with the name, even selling it away. Some hosting companies will put themselves as the administrator of the name, not you. This way, although you are paying for the domain name, the company actually owns it. You can never do anything for that name, as it does not belong to you.
4. What is the payment for a domain name?
MyNIC registration for a (.com.my) domain name costs RM 100 per year. InterNIC registration for a (.com) domain name costs RM 55 for one year if registered through us. You can choose to have your domain name either from MYNIC or INTERNIC or other registrars. Payments are handled by Emerge Systems as we're appointed domain resellers for both MYNIC and INTERNIC.
5. How long can my domain name be and what are the allowed characters?
Your domain name can be up to 24 characters excluding the extensions. Allowable characters in you domain are alphabets, numbers and the hyphen -". Other characters including underscore "_" is not allowed.
6. Are domain name case sensitive?
No. Domain names are not case sensitive. Generally, you can type (MyWebsite.com) or (mywebsite.com) and it will work in the same manner.
7. Can I have domain such as "mydomain.yourdomain.com"?
Yes. We can setup this kind of domain for you. The advantage of having this is that you won't need to register with MYNIC or INTERNIC. There will not be any registration fees. This kind of address is by far better looking than having a sub-domain for your website i.e. (www.yourdomain.com/mydomain).
8. Can I have sub-domain such as "www.yourdomain.com/mydomain"?
Yes. We can setup sub-domains for you. There will not be any fees charged by MYNIC or INTERNIC for sub-domains.
9. What is Administrative Contact in the domain name?
When we register for a domain name from MYNIC or INTERNIC, there will be an administrative person for each of the domain name. This person will be the rightful owner to the domain name. We will state that you are the rightful owner for the domain name. Some web hosting companies put themselves as the Administrative Contact. In this case, although you have access to your website, you don't own the website. This is cheating as you may never move the domain to another host or sell it away if someone offers you a lot of money for the domain name. You can check the Administrative Contact for your domain name by using the "Whois" command or we can check for you upon request.
10. Can you register the domain name for me?
Yes. Just fill in the ordering form from our website. You can also request for a copy from us by contacting any of our sales representatives.
11. Can I access my website with or without the "www"?
Yes. By using our servers, your website can be reached by anyone on the Internet both with and without the "www" in front of your domain name. I.e. (www.yourcompany.com) is the same as (yourcompany.com).
12. Can I transfer my domain hosting to you?
Yes. We can help you to transfer your existing domain for us to hosting. There will not be any extra charges on that. As an encouragement, we even provide a one full month of free hosting for you. However, if your existing hosting company registered themselves as the Administrative Contact for your website, you may not be able to transfer your domain to anywhere as you will not be the rightful owner to the domain.
13. How long will the setup process take?
There will be around 1-2 hours or less for us to setup the server. Once its ready, you may start to upload your website to a temporary directory while waiting for your domain name to be approved by the respective Registrars. Upon approval of domain, your website will be automatically transferred by us to you domain site. Domain registration under InterNIC will take around 24 hours. MYNIC registration will take around 24 to 48 hours. Your domain will only be activated when the Registrar receives your full payment.
14. What about setup for sub-domains?
For setting up sub-domain such as (www.emerge.com.my/YourCompany) and (YourCompany.emerge.com.my), there will be around 1-2 hours before your account is ready. This is much faster as there's no registration necessary from MYNIC or INTERNIC.
15. What are the things that I need to prepare for Domain registration?
For domain name (.my), MYNIC requires you to respond to their mail via e-mail stating that the information is correct. You should reply to them to verify this only after checking the form that will be sent to you by MYNIC. After that, you need to submit your Company's Registration form via fax along with your company's stamp, your signature and the requested domain name. The detailed guidelines will be sent to you from MYNIC. As for domain name (.com), INTERNIC will just ask you to verify the domain application via e-mail.

1. What is a Virtual Hosting?
A Virtual Hosting means having your own domain name (http://www.your-name.com) without having to install expensive server hardware and software. With a Virtual Hosting, you utilize our server's storage space and at the same time, you are still professionally represented via your own personal Internet web address, web site (www.your-name.com) and by your own personal e-mail address domain name (you@your-name.com).
2. Who is InterNIC?
The InterNIC is an independent organization responsible for holding the registration and routing of Internet domain names. Without these people it would be virtually impossible to maintain sanity on the Internet. Registration fee is at RM 55 per year for a (.com) domain name through us.
3. Who is MyNIC?
MyNIC is a division of MIMOS Berhad and they administers the name for the (.my) top level domain. Whatever domain name with the (.my) must be registered to MyNIC. Charges for a .my domain name is RM 100 per year. Organisations requesting for domain registration under (.my) must have been registered to Registrar of Companies (ROC) or Registrar of Business (ROB). Individuals are not permitted to apply for (.my) domain names.
Effective 28 September 2001, Emerge Systems has been appointed by MyNIC to handle registration for (.my) domain names. This means that businesses can now register (.my) domain names directly through Emerge Systems.
4. Can I access my domain address with or without the "www"?
Yes, by hosting with us, you will be able to access the domain address with or without the "www"in front of the domain name. Example: both (http://www.your-name.com) and (http://your-name.com) is acceptable and can be accessed by web users.
5. Do you handle the domain registration process?
Yes, we can help to submit domain request to MyNIC or InterNIC once your account is activated or upon confirmation. Please note that InterNIC will bill you RM 55 for using the domain name (www.yourname.com) per year. If you choose to have MyNIC, they will bill you RM 100 per year for the domain name (yourname.com.my).
6. Can I transfer an existing domain name to your servers?
Yes, just be sure to specify that you are requesting a transfer and NOT a new domain. You should keep the service with your current provider while waiting for MyNIC or InterNIC to complete the transfer process. We will provide you with a temporary IP address so you can mirror the site on our server. All email and web pages will still be accessed from your current site. When MyNIC or InterNIC announces the completion of the transfer there is a 24-48 hours propagation period where visitors could go to either site. At the end of the propagation, you will be able to have your site fully transferred.
7. How long does it take before my domain name is active?
Once InterNIC or MyNIC announces that your domain name has been registered (or transferred, if applicable), it usually takes about 24 hours before it is active. All Internet providers must update their records (DNS tables) to reflect the new site's location.
8. How do I transfer files to my web site?
Files must be transferred to the web server via File Transfer Protocol (FTP). If you need FTP or other Internet software, visit www.shareware.com. Shareware.com is a source for the latest Internet applications with ratings and reviews to help you decide which application is best suited for your needs.
9. Will I have unlimited access to update my pages?
Yes. You have unlimited access via FTP 24-hours a day. As such, you can create and maintain your web pages on your own computer and upload files to your web site at your leisure.
10. Can I use my account for commercial purposes?
Yes, you can use your account for commercial purposes. The World Wide Web has become the most efficient and cost-effective means of making information available to the users of the Internet community and we encourage our customers to utilize such an enormous medium.
11. Do you provide tech support?
Yes. We encourage our customers in need of assistance to send e-mail to us with questions or concerns about their web site. However, we provide technical support only; we cannot provide help with HTML syntax or CGI programming problems. This kind of assistance may incur extra charges. Technical support is done 24 hours a day, 7 days a week 365 days a year.
12. How long does it take to set up a new account?
New accounts are generally set up within 1-2 hours from the time we receive your confirmation. Once an account is set up, an activation notice will be sent to you via email including your user-ID, password, and FTP hostname. You can begin uploading files to your new web site immediately. Domain account users will be given a temporary URL to access their site via the web prior to the completion of either domain registration or domain modification.
